The Role of Technology and the Gig Economy as Facilitators of Wealth Work

David M. Savino
(Ohio Northern University, USA)

Abstract: The sustained economic growth of the U.S. economy over the last decade has facilitated the development and rise in what is referred to as the “gig economy” which is designed, for the most part, to provide new service opportunities or to cater to the personal needs of its consumers. The accumulation of wealth by many households has created a demand for the performance of personal services that at times may seem frivolous and excessive. However, the prevalence of such wealth coupled with a strong overriding desire for these services has created a concept known as wealth work. In addition, other elements such as the application of technology and its benefits to these areas makes such activities hard to ignore. Therefore, this is a study of the growth of this economic phenomenon and the implications for labor.
