Abstract: The research aims to explore the learning process and reflection on current education by the first experimental education students in National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), which is currently the only university implementing the experimental education project in Taiwan. First, the study applies Marcia’s identity theory model to experimental education students’ self-identity and value beliefs. The second part explores the nature of experimental education from, ratios and influences of different perspectives: from students, participating parents, internal teachers and external teachers. This study believes that teachers and students participating in experimental education should think about the question “Who is the subject of learning?” and urge students to think “When do students realize that they are the subject of learning?” To realize that one is the subject of learning, one must have two key points: one is “cooperation in learning freedom”, and the other is “cognition of self-realization ability”. Such alternative education is not heterogeneous, but paves the way for the transformation of higher education in advance. It is hoped that the results of this study will enable higher education administrators or teaching personnel to provide more comprehensive policy formulation reference and planning in the development of cultivation of talent.

Key words: experimental education, alternative education, higher education, Marcia’s identity statuses
