Abstract: Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) defined “heritages of industrial modernization” as “the structures concerned with industries, transportation, and construction from the last stage of the Edo period until the end of the Second World War” [1] and published 33 Heritage Constellations of Industrial Modernization and 33 Heritage Constellations of Industrial Modernization (Vol. 2) in 2007 and 2008 respectively. In this study, 1,115 pieces of heritages of industrial modernization contained in these two documents are taken as the research objects, and the typical and characteristic parts of them are analyzed and investigated through the categorization research to judge and evaluate the overall impression and value of Japanese heritages of industrial modernization. And from the perspective of heritage protection, utilization and redevelopment, the role of heritages of industrial modernization in local development and formation of regional characteristics are analyzed and summarized.

Key words: heritage of industrial modernization, categorization, local revitalization
